Journal Entry

The countdown is on

We are less than a month away from our departure date of June 16th!! It has been busy the last couple months with logistics meetings, visa applications, packing, obtaining evacuation medical insurance, Wilderness First Aid training, pre-meetings with our team researcher Mike Loranty from Colgate University and trying to finish up the year at Cheektowaga Central Middle School. Now that the plane tickets are purchased, conference registration is complete, lodging is booked and our visa letters are in the mail from Russia, it’s all coming together as our departure date is quickly approaching.

Meet the Researcher

Back in March Mike Loranty and I got together for some hiking and fishing in the Niagara Gorge to talk logistics about the trip and to film an interview answering some questions that students and staff of Cheektowaga Central have been asking. The fishing was kind of slow that day, but I feel as though the interview went well. You can check out the interview in following video and feel free to ask questions and comments for our team.

What a great video! Loved the questions from the kids and the interview gave us a great introduction to what your project is all about. Looking forward to following, Stan! Also loving the styles of your videos.

So how long did it take to get there from home to Siberia?

Stanley Skotnicki

Hey Eric - We broke up the trip a lot so it didn't seem that bad, but lots of time changes and jet lag once we got here. We flew from JFK to Berlin for a week long conference, which was an 8 hour over night flight. Then a short 2.5 hour flight to Moscow, a 7 hour flight to Yakutsk, and finally a 4.5 hour prop plane flight landing in Cherskiy and a 15 hour time difference to back home.
