Journal Entry

Good Morning From Utqiagvik!

I woke up this morning on the northern most point of the United States. How cool is that! Of course, since my body clock is still 3 hours ahead of everyone else, I thought I'd write about my journey here.

I left Oklahoma City Will Rogers Airport June 4th at 6:00 AM CDT (so that's 3:00 AM AKDT). I felt like the sunrise I witnessed was a good omen.

I landed in Chicago to change airlines. My next stop was Anchorage and then on to Prudhoe Bay and finally Utqiagvik.

Landing in Utqiagvik took two attempts. The fog was so thick that the pilots "missed" the airport. It did make for some amazing pictures and video! Luckily, 3rd time was a charm, and we landed safely at the Will Rogers Wiley Post Memorial Airport. Full circle.

A very foggy landing.

Student Questions

So many of you wanted to know what the weather is like. Like A LOT of you! The weather is pretty unpredictable here. Even more so than Oklahoma I think! Right now it's 29 degrees Fahrenheit and will get to be about 34. It's cold. The fog is pretty consistent because there is still so much snow on the ground and the wind off the Arctic Ocean isn't that warm either! On each of my journal entries, I will be posting the daily weather so you can watch how it changes from Utqiagvik, the coast of the Arctic Ocean, to Toolik, about 400 miles south. In my next journal, I will be explaining how the Flat Cat Travel Log will work so you can follow along in my journey!

OMG the pilots missed the airport?! Did they try to land in an empty field or did they know they missed it?

We broke through the fog and we weren't at the airport, so we quickly ascended. I'm not sure where we were, but it wasn't the airport!
