Off-Ice
I was pleasantly surprised when I landed in Christchurch on my planned off-ice date. No delays leaving the South Pole, no delays in McMurdo, everything went smoothly. I bet my family was crossing their fingers extra hard to have me home for New Year. It worked! Right now I am in Melbourne, Australia on a three hour layover before my last flight to Los Angeles! It will be the last flight and the longest, taking a little over 14 hours. I've got a few movies to watch and plenty of sleep to catch up on so I'm expecting it to go by quickly.
Yesterday I spent 10 hours in Christchurch. I had Thai food for dinner with Anna and Jannes and an ice cream bar from a little shop that was open late. I said see-ya-later to my new friends, hoping their work brings them to Los Angeles one day soon. Then I napped for 2 hours (with a dark night sky!), packed up my bags, and headed back to the airport.
No ice in sight in ChristchurchAlmost home, and still thinking about the South Pole. I look at pictures on my phone and remind myself, "Yep, I was really there."
Talk soon, friends.
