Hi Mrs. P!

About 5 dozen boats and 300 fishermen are stick in the ice near Newfoundland.  They are on the annual seal hunt.  Are weather conditions such the Bering Sea will ice up, too?

Read about your helicopter ride, what an adventure!

Hi Peder,
The seas are not icing up, but they are melting. The ice that we are going through right now is a mutiyear ice, leftover from last year. It is THICK! When the icebreaker Healy pushes her nose through it, it shudders and makes a noise very much like an earthquake.

Today, some scientists are going to try and get samples of the ice to look at the ice algae. It should be very interesting to be sure. Keep up the good work. I will be talking to your class on Thursday. I hope you will have some good questions to ask me!

warmly,

Mrs. P
