On Wednesday, May 29, 2013 we had the presence of Dr. Jim Madsen visiting Bilingual Class 621 at MS319 Maria Teresa Mirabal Middle School, as part of our “Adopt a Researcher” initiative. My students were chockfull of questions about the Ice Cube Neutrino Project and about the South Pole, Antarctica. Ever since January’s South Pole webcast we have talked about Neutrinos in class, and students went online and researched more in depth and created power point presentations, working in teams of two or independently. Artwork was created by the students, showcasing Neutrinos as subatomic particles coming from outer space stars such as the Sun, so small that millions of them pass throughout a thumb at all times. One of the most frequently asked question was why studying Neutrinos. The educational impact of this scientific initiative can have on a class of Bilingual 6th grader English Language Learners, mostly newly arrived to the USA, is already evidenced by their inquiry, and interest in Neutrinos. I believe that we are planting the seed for future STEM careers amongst these Latino middle school kids.
