Today was the first day of school at Kaveolook school in Kaktovik. We started the day with a school wide assembly in the gym. I shared a brief presentation with the two high school science classes and just completed another one for tomorrow or Friday. There are about 15 students in the high school here and all of the teachers teach multiple subjects and multiple grade levels. The middle school teacher teaches all four core subjects and gym class to 6th, 7th and 8th grade. Wow!
My colleague Marilyn decided to camp out at The Waldo Arms today to increase her chance of getting a flight out. She was successful! Yea for Marilyn, I hope that her entire journey goes smoothly. She'll be home sometime tomorrow. While I was at Waldo Arms, Merlyn, the proprietor, said that many bears were seen last night just a block or so from the school, near the Waldo Arms. One, a young male, was described as being a "nine footer". I was advised not to be out late, especially in fog, and on that note I will make my way to the bunkhouse as it is getting a bit late. 7:47 here equals 10:47 in Texas, and it's raining here. No longer foggy, now rainy!
Thanks for listening,
jill
