Journal Entry

After a few long days of training I am feeling slightly overwhelmed and excited all at the same time. We have long days learning how to post journals, learning about the polar regions, and networking. I am learning so may new things and my inner nerd is doing flips she is so excited. Our group is at the University of Fairbanks Alaska. Yesterday we took a field trip to the bookstore and I learned that a Nanook is a Polar Bear and the mascot of the University. On the way back to the hotel we stopped down the road and took pictures of reindeer. Being in Alaska is like being in a different world. The air is crisp and every time I walk I can hear the crunch of the snow under my boots. The sun starts to rise around 8 and in the morning before the sun comes out you can see the little ice crystals sparkling on the ground. Its like little twinkly lights have been embedded into the ground. It is pretty. There is hardly any wind so all of the trees are covered in snow and they look fake because the snow just stays there perfectly. The first time I saw it I thought I was transported into a movie. Walking outside I can see my breath on the air. Everything reminds me of being in a movie. Being here is like stepping into a new world that I am given the opportunity ot explore.

Fairy Tale LandThis is a tree in front of the hotel. The snow stays on it because there is no wind.

I absolutely loved your description, which very accurately and beautifully conveys the scenery here in Fairbanks. You are doing an awesome job, and keep those journals coming!

Sound like you are having a memorable experience, Very different from your home in Florida. I am just sitting here in Lauren's home helping her recover from surgery. Looking forward to seeing you when you return. Take lots of photos.
Love you , Aunt Rita & Lauren

I am so excited for you ant the other teachers that are doing this program. Happy that you are learning so much, your such a good student. So with reading about where you are and what you are doing I have a question about the temperature, -7 if I read correctly??? And if so what do you wear to keep the Florida girl warm?

I have been wearing tons of layers. I have thermal underwaer and wool underwear and I wear 3 shirts and two pairs of pants most days. I have a great pair of boots and wool socks. I burrowed a pair of gloves and they are warm and furry. Today we are learning about the clothes we will need for my time in Greenland. Tomorrow we are going to the Permafrost Tunnel. For that level of cold I will wear my usual layers and adding on a pair of snow pants and a balaclava.

Wooooow!!..I can't imagine having to wear all those layers..I bet going to the loo with all of that must be real fun huh??. I hope it's a little bit warmer in April. The two pictures you posted are awesome. I really like the tree, it sure does look like a scene from a movie. What is the Permafrost Tunnel? I read a little bit about it on the internet and it looks really interesting. What is a Balaclava?I'm glad that you are having a great time and learning a lot. You worked hard for this and you deserve it. Can't wait to hear about the new ideas you'll have for your students..and for that class I'm coming!!.
Keep having an amazing time and many more adventures. Keep us posted!!..

Oooh..and one more thing..Where's the Snowman??.. :-)

Going to the bathroom is a cold process. I'm glad you liked the pictures. I took the one of the tree at 7:15 in the morning. It was so
dark out! The permafrost tunnel is over 40,000 years old. Scientists use
it for research studying the fossils, ice, and soil within the cave. A
balaclava is a hat that goes over your head and covers almost your
entire face. It has a mouth and nose cover which you can pull up or push
down as needed. Stay tuned for pictures of me from the tunnel.
