Learning how to use a satellite phone. While I will have solid internet connectivity in the field, other teachers like Mark Paricio, who is headed to Siberia, will have to rely on a satellite phone as their sole line of communication. Reminds me of the early days of cell phones!
Gearing up for the Arctic!
The gear stash for Arctic expeditions. We visited the warehouse of CH2M Hill Polar Services, provider of arctic logistics to the National Science Foundation. Check out their great blog http://www.polarfield.com/blog/ about field science in the arctic! This would be our first chance to see the gear that would be provided to the teachers heading into the Arctic, and get a lesson on dressing for work in the field. Learning how to properly dress and pack for work in the field will be important for both our comfort and safety.
