Pink Crocs are in Chile!

Well, The first leg of my trip has progressed wonderfully. I am in Santiago, Chile Waiting for the next leg of this amazing journey.

Leaving Flagstaff, Arizona for the Southern Ocean. Life is grand!I am leaving on a jet plane, see you in a bit Flagstaff, Arizona

I am almost 24 hours in and am sure what I feel is the adrenaline of travel. Slept a bit on the plane last night, was super lucky to have two seats to myself, it was perfect. I have met part of the research team, and truly am in a state of anticipatory euphoria. My luggage made it and only my cashew raisin mix was confiscated, and my bacon jerky. I am sad to loose the bacon jerky.

Follow the pink Crocs as they tour the Southern Ocean.Pink Crocs come to Chile! Yahoo, my first penguin! The Office of Agencia Palmer, a moment to regroup and take my first real tourist picture.

The next leg is to Punta, Arenas. I still have an hour in Santiago, so a quick journal to let everyone know that I have made it to South America, Oh my goodness I am so excited! Thank you everyone for following along on this once in a lifetime adventure!

Too keep everyone in the loop. I am able to see your great comments, and Yahoo John got an estimate on my carbon footprint. Sadly I am having some technical issues so am unable to respond to your questions at this time. Thanks Lisa, Max and the oceanography class. I hope to respond soon. Jillian

Hi Briana, The plane was great. I love plane rides because they bring me to magical places. One day you will ride in a plane and you too
will experience the excitement of going someplace new. Ms. Worssam

Hi Jordan, Lots of preparations, food, supplies, all the technical gear, even arranging crew. A lot of work that I was not involved with,
but I will ask around for more details. Thanks Jordan. Ms. Worssam

Hi Anijah, Great comment. There is a huge change between Flagstaff and Sea level, approximately 7000 feet. I love it at sea level, lots
more oxygen so I think I have more energy. Thanks for writing, Ms.

Hi Javier, The trip is going well. I am not sick yet, but who knows. SO far the seas have been very calm. Thanks for asking. Ms. Worssam

Hey Mrs. Worssam, I'm so sorry to hear that your bacon jerky and cashew rasin mix was confiscated at the airport. Although I'm very happy to hear you've made it to Chile, however there are some questions I have for you. Is the economy different compared to the United States? How big was that penguin in your first real tourist photo and did you hug the penguin?

Jillian Worssam

Hi Serenity, You touched on a great topic. When I move from place to place I am experiencing different types of weather. Climate change is a
change over a longer period of time to an entire ecosystem. This about
your closet full of clothes. The jacket you put on today is for
weather, the clothes in the closet represent climate. Thanks for
writing. Ms. Worssam

Kimberly Shavonis

I love the pink crocs! How crowded is it in the airport/plane? And if you could describe your trip in one word, what would it be?

Jillian Worssam

Hi Logan, I have not fallen out of bed yet. But the seas have been really smooth. I will let you know if I fall out and take a picture of
the bruises. Ms. Worssam

HI mrs.Worssam, how was your trip so far? have you learned anything yet? Have you fell out off bed yet? we miss you mrs.worssam see you in a month.

Jillian Worssam

Hi Tyler, There are great rooms on the boat. I have my own room, but here is a description on how to get out of a top bunk on a ship:
"Its not much different than getting out of a bunk bed on land,
although the pitch and roll of the ship in the water adds a level of
difficulty. You have to slide close to the edge and then perform a 180
degree turn so you can put your leg on the ladder, being careful to not
fall when the boat tilts in any direction. The other hard part is
deciding to actually take the covers off and get out of bed. -Nick Benz,

Hi Laura, Thanks for the empathy, I do miss the bacon jerky, so delicious. Yes the economy is different in Chile than in America, and
their money system is very different. It is about 600 Chilean pesos to
one American dollar. I have not seen a penguin yet. Hopefully soon.

From reading your last journal, I see you've made it to South America! I'm running with jealousy because I've never been outside the country. When will you or when did you leave on the boat? It's spring where you are, correct? How warm or cold is it down there? Does the cold temperature of Antartica affect the heat of the Southern tip of South America?
I'm afraid that because all of every class is probably going to comment you the same day or more, if I write too much you won't be able to read it all. I know I wouldn't mind, but you are more different and unique than any of my teachers so far! I have absolutely no idea what you might think.

Have a wonderful rest of the trip! (Whether boat or plane!)

P.S. I've moved to Honors Science!

Jillian Worssam

Hi Elise,
I am super glad you moved to the honors class. Let's see if I can get
you a new mentor while I am aboard the Palmer. I set foot on the Palmer
yesterday and will not leave for 30 days. I will have what I call
"rubber" legs when I next walk on land. Great questions, the southern
tip of South America is also in spring so it was a bit chilly in Chile
as well. hehehe. Elise, I think it is great to be different and
unique and feel free to write as much as you like! I love the
correspondence, it is great to hear your questions and comments.

Jillian,
So glad to see you landed in Chile. I'm sure you are exhausted but maybe since you had your own row, you got some sleep! Glad that you also connected with Larry. We look forward to reading about the rest of your adventure.

Love the crocs :)
