Journal Entry
It is cold enough that the sea spray that hits the ship is starting to freeze - on wires and lines, on the deck, on the railings. A few pieces of equipment that are stored on the deck are covered with heated blankets or wrapped with heat tape in order to prevent things from icing up and ceasing to work. The ice can be a real hazard, but it can also look quite pretty. I enjoyed taking pictures of icicles hanging from the edge of a scupper (or hole in a ship's side designed to let water flow off the deck) but I can't decide which one turned out the best. Let me know what you think.
In extreme cold, sea spray begins to freeze on every exposed surface of the R/V Nathaniel B. Palmer icebreaker (in the Amundsen Sea off the southwest coast of Antarctica).
