Overview
Teacher leads class through collaborative lesson. Language Arts, Social Studies and Science Book "Good-Bye My Island". Chapters of the 16 chapter book are read, summarized and taught by teams of students.
Objective
General Learning Outcomes: Academic Achiever-by reading the assigned chapter and summarizing the important points. Community Contributor-by giving information to the rest of the class so that all 16 chapters may be understood. Effective Communicator- by telling (through drawing, singing, or drama) the essential points of the assigned chapters.
Preparation
Secure copies of all chapters, enough for your class. Print out Activity Guide.
Procedure
- Introduce students to the idea of subsistence living.
- Introduce students to Alaska and King Island. Review PowerPoint photos and links in Resources section.
- Introduce students to vocabulary in book.
- Read chapter 1.
- Assign chapters to students.
- Handout Activity Guides (The first page is for students, the second and third is reference material for teachers)
- Develop rubric with students to meet standards.
- Guide students through reading, summarizing, and communicating their chapter to class.
- Reflect on project (see tips in section of Activity Guide)
