Oftentimes called “ghost particles,” neutrinos can travel through nearly everything (the sun, the earth, you!) undetected. Because they are nearly massless, gravitational fields do not affect neutrinos; Similarly, because they are chargeless, electric and magnetic fields do not con affect neutrinos. This lack of interaction is advantageous for IceCube researchers – when they detect a neutrino, it is a
We once again stayed in station today. Weather permitting, we will be going out to the drilling site tomorrow to gather a few surface samples that we need. We worked out a system for doing that today. I also observed lots of the day-to-day operations that happen here. As I've said in previous logs
Today was a fairly quiet day for the science team. After getting the rest of the core samples that we needed yesterday, we stayed at the station today. This gave everyone a chance to catch up on the paperwork portion of the project. It also provided the team an opportunity to rest up (we had one
Today was a beautiful day on the ice sheet. It reached almost 20 degrees Fahrenheit. It was very sunny, and the winds were light. In fact, it got too hot while out working at our drilling site. Most of us ended up taking off coats and hats because we were too warm. It was also a good day of drilling
It is a small world. Sitting in class today with Dr. Lance Lambert, I asked about whether he had been to Wisconsin to take in the Baraboo Mountains and their exceedingly old quartzite rock after he eluded to them in our afternoon talk. He said he had only been to visit a colleague in Milwaukee, Dr
-33˚ F to 93˚ F, the difference between February in Alaska and June in Texas. In less than 5 months, I will be able to report the temperature in Antarctica on a first hand basis. I am still in a state of disbelief. This is really happening. Tonight, I am sitting in the Lone Star State, alone, but
Adeena Teres is further recognized with a proclamation from the Broward County Commissioner Michael Udine shown in local online publication "Coral Springs Talk".
An article in the May 2017 issue of Parklander Magazine which talks about Adeena Teres' trip to Greenland with Operation IceBridge and how she plans to use what she learns in her classroom.
Upcoming Event: There will be a LIVE PolarConnect Event from Summit, Greenland with the team on Tuesday, June 20, 2017. Find out more about the event time and register here. Much like yesterday, we decided to stay out at the drill site for the
Today was a long, but fruitful day of working out at our drilling site. Since we previously had a few problems with the poor weather and the drill malfunctioning, we decided to make up for some of the lost time today. We headed out at 8:00 AM and worked through until 6:00 PM. The weather was perfect
